El uso más común de la energía es la iluminación ya que ocupa el 19% del consumo de la electricidad mundial. Actualmente, la baja eficiencia en las anteriores tecnologías y el malgaste de la iluminación hacen evidente la necesidad de introducir mejoras en este sector.
El tipo de iluminación más antiguo es la iluminación incandescente que fue inventada a finales de 1800. Este tipo de iluminación posee una eficiencia de conversión eléctrica energía-luz de sólo el cinco por ciento y a pesar de esto, son las que más se utilizan en el sector residencial. La iluminación incandescente consume el 30% de la energía eléctrica usada para iluminación mientras que sólo produce el siete por ciento de luz efectiva.
Actualmente la alternativa de iluminación de interior son las lámparas fluorescentes. Este tipo de iluminación representa el 64% de la iluminación generada eléctricamente y el 45% del uso de energía eléctrica para iluminación. La eficiencia de la iluminación fluorescente varía según el tipo de lámpara, aunque generalmente es de 5 y 8 veces mayor a las incandescentes. La mayoría de las lámparas fluorescentes emiten luz ultravioleta debido a su modo que funcionamiento.
Una tecnología alternativa en iluminación con amplia variedad de aplicaciones son los Diodos Emisores de Luz (LEDs, por sus siglas en inglés), ya que son la tecnología de Iluminación en Estado Sólido (SSL, por sus siglas en inglés) de mayor disponibilidad en el mercado.
Actualmente, los LEDs se encuentran reemplazando rápidamente a otras fuentes de iluminación y son una tecnología preferida para luces decorativas y de diferentes aplicaciones.

¿Qué son los LEDs?
Los LEDs son dispositivos en estado sólido que generan luz de una manera radicalmente diferente a otras fuentes de luz. Las lámparas incandescentes simplemente calientan un filamento de metal (tungsteno) a miles de grados Celsius debido a su resistencia al paso de la corriente eléctrica. A esta temperatura el filamento emite luz, luz que se ubica en el área infrarroja del espectro lumínico, de ahí la ineficiencia de este tipo de lámparas. Las lámparas fluorescentes generan luz al pasar corriente eléctrica a través de vapor de mercurio, esta genera una excitación que hace al vapor de mercurio emitir luz ultravioleta (UV). La luz UV golpea el fósforo dentro de la lámpara que hace que ésta se vuelva fluorescente y produzca luz blanca visible. El proceso requiere de un balasto (dispositivo electrónico) para controlar el flujo de electricidad.
